For
family members who are interested in other pursuits, there is a wealth
of activities in the area suited to everyone. There are superb golf
courses at Westport and Ballyconneely, and horse riding is available
locally.
For sightseeing, Connemara is renowned for its mountain walks, scenic
drives, and fine sandy beaches. There are daily cruises on Killary,
Ireland's longest fjord, in addition to boat trips to Inisbofin
and Clare Island. Sea angling can be arranged.
The fisheries board manages salmon fisheries nearby on the Bunowen
and Carrowniskey Rivers, excellent spate fisheries in their own right,
and a daily permit can be arranged. The brown trout fishing in the
area is world class, with the famous Mayfly season on Lough Corrib
the highlight, and Loughs Mask and Carra also within a reasonable
driving distance.
