Map of Beat 4

The river changes character here and becomes more manageable with a single handed rod. This beat is best accessed via the roadway at the Broken Bridge or from the car park at the top of the beat. The first pool on the beat is the Washing Pool which holds fish in all levels of water. The pool is best fished from the stream at the top in low water - in high water it fishes best at the tail of the pool. Fish can be taken downstream to Kelly's Bend on a falling spate.

King's Pool is situated more or less in the middle of the beat and it can be fished from the stream at the head of the pool right down to the tail of the pool. There is a little stream joining the river on the left hand bank and the area opposite the stream, is a great taking place. In a very high spate fish lie where the river widens right at the bottom of the pool. Toad's Pool and The Meadow Pool are situated where the main river joins up again below King's Island - these are mainly pools where Grilse are taken. Downstream is the stretch of river known as The Bog and it is a very difficult area to walk due to the nature of the boggy ground - it is best fished from the right bank in a falling spate.

The next pool on the beat is the Cottage Pool which as the name suggests is situated beside the cottage on the right bank - it is a relatively short pool that is best fished from the left bank. It is a pool that was previously almost unfishable but was very much improved by cleaning the scrub, deepening and from the rock-armour bank work that was carried out on the opposite bank. It fishes beautifully with a single handed rod and a fish can be taken anywhere in the pool. The last pool on the beat Poleen is undoubtedly one of the most productive pools on the river - for many years it has produced the first spring salmon of the season. It holds both Springers and Grilse right throughout the season - it is a pool that merits fishing very carefully from the stream at the top of the pool right down to the rapids where it flows under the Broken Bridge to beat 5.
